I’m back from a whirlwind holiday trip to the states. We took very few pictures. I got a 20mm lens for my Panasonic micro 4/3rd.
The clouds here were taken from the airplane window on the last leg of the flight home.
I’m doing a happy dance now that Jessica Truscott has reopened her stock account. Yippee!

how I made this picture

Having two challenge images simplifies things somewhat. So I didn’t have to go out into the wild hunting down stock. I like to keep my composites somewhere close to dreamy/surreal empowered goddesses.

I had a glowing ball in her hands at some point but if you look at the other contest entries that didn’t seem to be a very original idea of mine. Of course birds would have been nice too but then there was a passage in the book I’m reading about a fairy-land with butterflies flitting around everywhere. If you’ve ever been to a butterfly display you’ll understand the magical sense that butterflies give an environment. Anyway I layered that and finished if off with one of my favorite texture stock maker-person and voila!

Two things I adore; Skeletal Mess’s textures and Marcus Ranum’s models. SM’s textures give a glorious finished look to any image. And Ranum’s pictures are so professional that they are quite a delight to work with. I’ve tried to make an edit with this model before — I had cropped just her captivating eyes and played around with a tutorial but never got results I wanted to share. And this … well this edit was pretty intuitive so I can’t really explain what I did. I do remember spending ages trying to get her hair to be a believable color but in the end I pretty much masked it all out.

…look at it this way…

…well I didn’t get around to this in time for the model contest. To make this work together I changed some of the floor tiles to match the cyan tones of his hat and shoes. After some color & tone corrections I made a texture from the sole of the shoes and layered that into the background. Since this is such a cool trippy model I made his muscles really pop by over emphasizing the highlights and very subtly playing with the skin’s saturation.
